WTN:`06 Le G de Chateau Guiraud, Bordeaux Blanc Sec.

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Tue Mar 11, 2008 4:02 pm

When I came across this white Bordeaux from the well-known Sauterne producer, I was intrigued so purchased a bottle for $25 Cdn.

13.5% alc, good natural cork, opened an hour, nine months in oak.
A blend of 70% S.B and 30% Semillon.

WTN: `06 Le G de Chateau Guiraud.

The color is a deep lemon verging on light gold. On the nose, I find some soft aromatics and thankfully lacks the cats pee one finds with other sauv Blancs! Fresh, clean, floral, mango, lemon zest just grated.
I have to add I thought I found some trace of blackcurrant leaves, or something similar?

On the palate, lots going on here. Not completely dry with hints of some RS, but refreshing maybe a tad short on the finish. Apple, gooseberry, quite minerally. Good acidity here, not bracing though.
Guess the semillon adds the creaminess here, fellow taster found "some lime". I quite like this one but will see what developes overnight. Guess a lot cheaper down south which would make this a good buy!

its about $16 US but goes on sale sometimes. IMO one of the great bargains of the wine world right now. a seriously fine wine - one of the best dry white bordeaux i have ever had. the '06 vintage for whites from bordeaux truly is amazing across the board. great flavor AND great acidity. love it, love it, love it.

That's quite a recco, David; knowing your tastes, I better go find me a case of this.

As I watch some curling on telly, thought I would finish off the G. The finish has really livened up with nice added grapefruit character.
Has not lost anything overnight, nice!

Been shopping for this all morning. Found only one source on the west coast so far, but was hoping for a cooler departure point than Los Angeles. Not widely distributed, is it?

Jenise, on the Guiraud link, the button "où trouver nos vins" gives several addresses in California but none closer than that, I think. It may not be accurate, however. One of the Belgian addresses given doesn't currently offer Guiraud.

David, someone brought this wine to lunch yesterday (see Bill Spohn's notes). It's everything you said--must purchase!

Garagiste offered the 07 of this several months ago at $17. Bit on one bottle that just arrived last week amidst a slew of other wine - will check that out before the month is over.

Salil, after a glass with fish cakes, do not think you will be disappointed!

Given my seafood allergy, I'll have to find another pairing, Bob. Maybe with a rosemary roasted chicken (just picked up a good amount of chicken to play around with in the next couple of days) - or do you think it might be rich enough to stand up to something with a little spice like a satay?

This sounds much better than any of the white Bdx I opened this month.

Hi Tim. The `07 is showing a different style somewhat but will post thoughts later today. It is still a very good wine though.

Salil, think your rosemary chick will work quite well. Spice might be a problem.
