TN for Weekend of June 1st, 2019

The first wine of the weekend was a rose made from Granache and Cuonoise, the Matar Rose 2018. It's crispness and fruit were very refreshing and very well balanced. To dig deep and reflect would be to ignore the pure pleasure the wine offers.
Then I had the Prix Hagafen Pinot Noir 2014. I remembered this wine as the Contessa in Visconti's Senso, exuding the sumptuously svelte elegance of cherry and its blossoms beneath her smokey, hazy veil. What I actually sensed was akin to Madonna appearing from behind a smokescreen, flaunting her glitzy charms by way of ripe pomegranate. Not bad, provided you are prepared to admit that is appealing to you, but a far cry from where it was a year ago. I'm not sure whether to conclude that even quality Californian Pinot Noir is best enjoyed in its youth, but I feel comfortable saying that about those from Hagafen.

Best Regards,
Pinchas
