Gary V tastes Israeli wines

by Avi Hein » Mon Aug 04, 2008 5:48 pm

Am watching the episode now but Gary Vaynerchuk's Wine Library TV has a tasting of the wines imported by forum member Richard Shaffer's Israeli Wine Direct on his latest episode. The URL is: http://tv.winelibrary.com/2008/08/04/israeli-wines-wines-from-israel-that-are-not-kosher-episode-513/.

My favorite line - Israeli wine: it's better than Ohio. Overall, Israeli wines are scored well with some comments about being overpriced.

Gary Vaynerchuck expends so much energy in tasting four wines that it makes me feel exhausted. But lawsy, lawsy, whether you personally like his style or not, the guy does get it across! Power to the people....

If you didn't watch this episode, do so!!!!!

The scores that he attributes to Rogov do not seem consonant with those in last year's book. Where do those scores come from?

OK, I did some checking and realized that it's just a question of whether the scores are taken from your winery-visit notes posted on Strat's Place or from your '08 Guide. The Bravdo, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 scored 91 pts. in your '08 Guide, but dropped to 89 pts. in your March 31, 2008 tasting. The score attributed to the wine on the show was 89.

No crazy conspiracy theories here. Just a bit of a mix-up.

Great episode. I really enjoyed watching it. It's great to see Israeli wine and Richard's project get good press. And once again, Rogov, it seems that Gary Vaynerchuk loves you.

Reading the comments, I found it interesting that on previous WLTV shows where Gary has talked about Israel, people did not seem all that excited to go out and buy Israeli wines. After yesterday's show, based on the comments, it looks like people are finally ready to go out and find Israeli wines, even if just to try them. Let's just hope they find decent bottles.

Does it annoy anyone else that some people put Israel in the same category as Ohio?

Nah. I think it was just a joke on Gary's part that fell flat. On a more positive note, Ohio holds a unique record because eight American presidents came from that state.
