TN Request

Daniel - I inquired about these some time ago, but I never saw a response. Are you familiar with either of these kosher wines? :

Chateau de Lavagnac Bordeaux 2003
Domaine Gibourg Pommard 2005

Thank you very much,
Robert

Robert, Hi....

Following is my note for the one wine on your mini-list that I have tasted.

Best
Rogov

Chateau de Lavagnac, Bordeaux Superieur, 2003: Garnet towards royal-purple, 75% Merlot blended with equal parts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium- to full-bodied, with good concentration and showing an appealing array of aromas and flavors, those including blackberries, black cherries and milk chocolate, all leading to a long plumy finish. An often under-rated chateau. Drink now-2011. Score 88. (Tasted but not blind 3 Jun 2006)

Daniel, thanks so much! I've been looking forward to your notes for a long time. I have my doubts, however, as to whether this bottle will prove to be worth the price I paid for it (I'm almost ashamed to say how much).

Best,
Robert

Robert, Hi...

I've seen that wine going for as much as US$ 195. Truth is that kosher Burgundy wines, no matter how good, tend to be very overpriced. Sad as well that most of the Burgundy kosher releases have not been nearly as good as this one.

Rogov,

Do you have a TN for the 2009 kosher version?

Thanks.

Michael, Hi...

That is one of the wines en route to me by air freight. Should be arriving today or tomorrow. Please...remind me to post my tasting note about ten days from now.

Michael, Hi...

The wine that arrived was the 2005 edition. If you are certain that the 2009 wine has been released, would you be kind enough to tell me where you found it so that I can lay hands on a bottle.

At any rate, my tasting note for the 2005 wine follows.

Hello Daniel,

Is this the best kosher Burgundy available today?

Thanks,

the 2009 was listed on the 'a cow jumped over the moon' website. It seems as if perhaps the store has shut down, and I have no new information. If the store did close, I wonder what happened to the wine...

Michael,

Several barbs all pointed at myself. Before responding earlier I should have followed the sage advice of Charlie Chan: "Engage brain before opening mouth"

Had I done so I would have realized that with very few exceptions the 2009 Pommard wines have not yet been released and if listed as they are with many shops are adavance orders.

I suspect that the Cow may have stumbled as it crossed the moon, for the probability that they actually have this wine in stock is pretty close to nil. As to their web site, I was looking for something on there the other day and all was well. This evening, however, the site seems to be down. Perhaps just a temporary gap in cyberspace. I will follow up on this...Have already sent off two emails to Burgundy.

David, Hi….

Indeed the 2005 Gibourg Pommard was one of only two kosher Burgundy wines that attained scores of 90. Following though are my tasting notes for several others of interest.

Special care should be taken with regard to kosher Burgundy wines and oneshould note that quite a few of those being imported into the United States might best be categorized as "not all that admirable in quality". To add insult to injury some of those wines are going for prices that many would consider outrageous. Caveat emptor most definitely applies here.

Best
Rogov

Henri Darnat, Puligny Montrachet, Champs Gains, Francois Labet Selection, 2004: Lightly burnished gold in color, medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity and abundant apple, peach and mineral notes on first attack, those yielding to notes of lemon curd and dried apricots all leading to a long and generous finish. Drink now. Score 88.

Henry Darnat, Batard Montrachet, Francois Labet Selection, 2004: Light gold in color, medium-bodied with generous minerality to highlight tangerine, peach, pineapple fruits. Fine balancing acidity makes the wine both complex and elegant. Drink now-2013. Score 90.

Perrin, Pommard Chanlain, Burgundy, 2002: A well-made Pommard, dark ruby towards garnet, medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a light earthy note to highlight red currant and blackberry fruits, those parting from mid-palate on to reveal hint of what at one moment seems to be mint, at another licorice, all leading to a long finish on which the tannins and fruits rise together. Drink now . Score 88.

Joseph Roty, Bourgogne Rouge, 2003: A well-done generic Burgundy red, revealing generous blackberry and cassis notes on a medium-bodied, gently tannic background. Shows good balance and texture and lingers nicely on the palate. Very nice one indeed. Drink now. Score 88.

Roux Pere & Fils, Chassagne Montrachet, Burgundy, 2004: Simultaneously lush and lively, showing generous summer fruits, lemon curd and spices on a background that hints nicely of earthy minerals. Drink now-2014. Score 89.

Hi Rogov,
How about those that are not kosher, but below or equal 200NIS price tag and are easily accesible in major Israeli wine stores (not those that one must order by calling the importer)? Is there anything exceptional that you would recommend? For sure worth opening a new thread, will do.
