What Israeli Wineries Might Learn from an Israeli

by Daniel Rogov » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:21 pm

From time to time I have no choice but to marvel at the success that Shimshon Welner is having with his kosher wines. A few weeks ago I learned that his wines had entered into the Trader Joe's branches in the USA and now has entered – and big-time – into Tesco in the U.K.

His wines are now displayed at the entrance to 52 different stores and a goodly number of people not even caring or aware that they are kosher. Better yet, the wines are displayed in two segments of the wine department – the kosher section and the "regular" section. As to options:

Terrenal Spanish Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay at 3.99 Sterling
Primo V Moscato at 6.98 Sterling
Primo V Pinot Grigio at 5.98 Sterling
Primo V Prosecco at 8.99 Sterling

There is a lesson to be learned here.

Today we've had two posts complementing producers of kosher wines: this post applauding Shimshon Welner, and another praising Jeff Morgon for placing fourth in a tasting of 20 Napa Cabs by Asimov. In my opinion Shimshon's accomplishment is much greater than Jeff's, it is the more difficult to achieve and the one with the greater potential for improving the standing of kosher wines in the eyes of the general public as well as in those of the critics.

As Daniel said, hopefully other Israeli producers will learn from Shimshon what it takes to break into the international markets.

THis is the third thread recently about Shimshon and they are all well deserved. As I stated in my posting about him (http://kosherwinemusings.com/2011/01/30/welner-wines-sells-to-the-under-10-dollar-wine-segment-with-panache-chutzpah-and-quality/, he is pushing the envelope by creating good drinking wines for a reasonable price. He is not looking for wines that will sell for 30 bucks or wines that will score a 90 or more. Instead he is looking to get reasonably priced wines to as close to the customer as he can, which are fresh and good tasting.
