Tis is the season for [kosher] wine tasting...

by Yossie Horwitz » Wed Jan 09, 2013 6:36 pm

With Purim and Pesach just around the corner, the calender is starting to fill up with the many annual wine-tasting events that occur every year around this time, and some other ones as well. I have listed most of them on my "Coming Events" page (http://www.yossiescorkboard.com/?page_id=875), including some coupons/discounts, but the basics are below. One huge event whose date has not yet been finally set is Gotham Wine's annual tasting - a major event, well worth attending!

1) Wednesday, January 23: Recanati Wine Tasting (and art gallery viewing) with the Kosher Wine Society and Recanati's Gil Shatsberg (http://www.kosherwinesociety.com/kws_events.php?function=view_event&event=174).

2) Monday, January 28: Royal Wine will be holding it's annual [European] tasting in London.

3) Monday, February 4: The Big Kahuna - Royal's annual KFWE2013 at Chelsea Piers in NYC (http://kfwe2013.com/). Separate thread to coordinate a forum blowout dinner post the event. Current thoughts are Ladino Tapas, La Maries or Mike's Bistro.

4) Wednesday, February 6: Royal's West Coast event - IFWF (http://ifwf2013.eventbrite.com/#). I will be there as well - looking forward to seeing all the West Coast forumites (who aren't coming to NYC).

5) Sunday, February 17: Yehoshua's Gerapevine is hosting a pre-Pessach grand tasting in Monsey (http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=46336).

6) Sunday, March 3: The Jewish Week's annual grand tasting at City Winery, presented in conjunction with thier publication of the annual Kosher Wine Guide (http://www.citywinery.com/newyork/jewish-week-wine-tasting-3-3.html).

Some unfortunate news here. According to Costas, Gotham is not having their annual wine tasting this year due to scheduling conflicts. (They are still trying to work out something for the VIP tasting)

It was still up in the air till last week, I am saddened to hear it is official. Jewish Week sounds like the only cross distributor wine event. Yossie, do all distributors come to the JW event or is it just the wines that were sent to the JW judges?

All the distributors come out. I spoke to the JW today and they haven't lined up everyone yet, but especially given the fact that Gotham isn't having their event this year, I would expect a large turnout. I will tell you that the number of submissions to the JW tasting/Annual Wine Guide nearly doubled this year to include closer to 400 wines...

I see that some want cross Distributor wine event...

The Grapevine Wines show is 8+ Distributors.. That should cover things :)

Last year we poured 125 Wines @ 10 locations in the room...

Yossi came out 3 shows ago and since it has ballooned. Thank you Yossi :)

Dave - unfortunately I have very little control over the actual event... I will try to make Yehoshua's event but its a bit late and a far drive from the city... :-). How many wines are you expecting to pour? Is there a concrete wine list yet?

For the Royal one, for tradespeople, do you preregister or just come with a business card? If I'm not bottling, I hope to be at the West Coast one, preferably with my son, a certified bartender and consultant for events.

You need to per register. For the LA event, there is a link to register. For the NY event, you need to contact them. Gary L. on the forum could likely assist.

With Gotham not making a wine tasting it may be worth looking into the Varietal wine tasting as well - I am pretty sure he has a pretty wide selection of wines - I have not gone to it though because I was not satisfied with the rabbinical supervision the one time I did go.

I think between the City Winery / Jewish Week tasting and the Grapevine one, you should be covered. I attended the Kosher Wine Society Recanati tasting last night which was pretty nice. Good selection of wines and some great cheeses from the Cheese Guy (apparently he also makes some from raw milk that can be found in Fairway). Plus Gil brought some samples of the newly released Reserve wines launched last week in Israel which I will taste soon.

Ramot Naftaly may also be at the City Winery event.

OK, I'm all registered, and will be attending the Herzog thing unless I'm bottling or thereabouts. And if I'm so far away from bottling, might as well drown my sorrows at Breskin's the next day.

In case it is not obvious (was not obvious to me) - first of all the page loads VERY SLOWLY because it uses flash - WHY OH WHY??? Than use the keyboard arrow keys to move back and forth, or right mouse click on the image and choose forward or backwards.
