Israel really doesn't have the climate for Pinot. Israel's best vineyards are characterized by hot days and cool nights, more specifically large, consistent, diurnal temperature swings which is a fastball down the middle of the plate for Cabernet and many red grape varieties but not for Pinot, which thrives with cooler, almost marginal (marginally warm enough to ripen grapes fully at all) daytime temps and NOT such cold nights or such large diurnal temp swings.
Having said that, I don't recall if I've had the Gvaot or not. Haven't had much Israeli Pinot since I've been back, and the one time someone sat me down for a comparative blind tasting of 3 Israeli Pinots I didn't think any of them were worth the purchase price. I also told the producer of one of the Pinots (it was pre bottling, or at least pre-labeling IIRC) that he should NOT put his winery brand name on it but rather use a second label to dissociate it from his brand. Actually first I told him to throw the wine out, and THEN I suggested the second label approach when it was clear he wasn't going to dump the stuff...
When Gabby Sadan of Shvo winery was at Galil Mountain, the Pinots there were darn interesting and good. (I am not familiar yet with how Micah Wadia is doing with Pinot at Galil Mt.)
Life is too short to drink bad wine.
