Hi Harry,

Arza, Tel Arza, Mediterranean Blend 2011: This is one of the 3-4 wines released by the veteran Arza winery as part of the quality improvements it's undergoing since France-trained winemaker Philippe Lichtenstein was hired as head winemaker some 5-6 years ago. A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. Plummy purple in color with on the nose notes of plums, blackberries, black pepper and leather. Medium-bodied with on the palate black fruits, pepper, olives, roasted herbs and meat, good acidity and soft, integrated tannins with a hint of coffee on the average finish. 13.5% Abv. A decent wine with enough complexity to grab the attention.

Best,

GG

Hi, Harry, shavu'a tov,

Friday night: 2009 Gamla Pinot Noir. OK drinking with the meal.

Shabbat lunch: 2010 Vignobles David Reserve. Enjoyed, although my wife had some trouble with it. It smoothed out during the meal, but my wife found the alcohol over pronounced. I felt it, but did not think it was "hot." Maybe the best way to describe it was the balance ever so slightly off.

A good week to all,

Isaac

Interesting Isaac, I just had a bottle of the 10 this past week and - found it needed a few good hours to open. Once there, it showed a bit of over ripe notes, but really not much at all and deeply aromatic and luscious, with mouth draping tannins.

Deeply aromatic? you bet, especially all that spice, love it. I also think that my wife confused (rare occasion) tannins with the alcohol. Nonetheless, I felt what she caught. At any rate, we'll finish the bottle this evening, so we'll see if further "smoothing" occurs.

David, further smoothing did occur. Wine was lovely this evening. One must learn patience with all good things.

Had the mevushal version of the 2012 Capcanes Peraj Petita at my nephew's Bar Mitzvah. Served with fried hicken. I was quite busy and remember little about it. Asked a few people what they thought and got no negative comments but no enthusiastic ones either. I look forward to trying it again when I can actually pay attention.

Hi Harry,

Flam Blanc 2011 - Since the 2013 vintage of this wine has just been released, I decided to have a bottle I saved from two vintages ago. The blend in 2011 is 58% Sauvignon Blanc and the remainder is Chardonnay. The characteristics of the wine have remained constant, showing a sprightly lightness, that manifests itself in all the aspects of the wine. The flavors, of which there are plenty, express themselves as hints of apple and pineapple, combined with traces of grass and mint. The restraint of the flavor is matched by an equal measure of restraint in alcoholic content--standing at 12%--as well as in body. However, a key to enjoying the wine is to pair it carefully. Any food that is heavily flavored with herbs, sauces or spices, will overwhelm it. Overall, this wine is better suited for the spring and summer than for drinking in the winter. B+/**/Y

Tzora Neve Ilan 2005 - The wine is made of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is medium bodied. While it has developed some mature flavors, the red berry flavors are present. It has a punch-like quality lending it a rustic air. 13.5% AbV. B-/**/N

Best,
-> Pinchas

Grading for quality: A - marvelous, B - good/intriguing, C - mediocre/uninspiring, D - subjectively flawed, F - objectively flawed
Grading for value: *** - it's a steal, ** - it's a reasonable deal, * - you've been robbed
Indication of further interest: Y - would purchase again, N - no desire to purchase more

Three wines this past week:

http://kosherwinemusings.com/2014/01/27 ... s-weekend/

The shocker is something that we, on this forum have been discussing for sometime now, the fact that some Israeli wines taste VASTLY different here in the states, than they do in Israel itself. This time it was the "newish" 2010 Carmel Cab, Single Vineyard Sumaka wine. The wine that I brought from Israel myself, with an Israeli label tasted very nice. The wine I tasted here in the US was 100% pure date juice, over the top, and offensive.

Interesting again to me. Finally, the 2010 VDR continues to rock and the new wine from Herzog was a nice Chard
