WTN: Two Calif Rhones....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Mar 20, 2017 9:52 pm

Tried these two over the weekend:
1. EdmundsStJohn Heart of Gold ElDorado WTW (53% Vermentino/47% GrenacheBlanc; 11.5%) ThumbnailMoonlight/
Fairplay 2015
: Light gold color; very fragrant floral/GB/honeysuckle spicy/bit cardamon slight earthy/perfumed talc lovely aromatic nose; rather tart/tangy/bit lean bright/vibrant honeysuckle/GB/spicy light perfumed talc/earthy flavor; very long bright/tart/zippy strong GB/floral/honeysuckle/pear light earthy/perfumed talc/mineral finish; a bright/zippy/enervated/nervous white w/o seeming thin or eviscerated; reminds some of Piemonte Favorita; a steal at $23.00
2. OjaiVnyd Syrah ThompsonVnyd/SBC (14.5%) 2007: Very dark color w/ little bricking; very strong smokey/toasty/oak very strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/some peppery light licorice/pungent slight roasted meats/Rhonish rather complex nose; somewhat soft strong toasty/smokey/Ojai oak strong blackberry/spicy/Syrah/rather peppery bit earthy/rustic slight roasted/Rhonish fairly complex flavor w/ light bit bitey tannins; very long very spicy/blackberry/Syrah/peppery some toasty/smokey/oak slight earthy/roasted/Rhonish somewhat complex finish w/ modest spiky tannins; showing some complex evolution but still rather youthful; a classic middle-aged Ojai Syrah that shows classic Thompson pepper character; can go another 3-8 yrs I would guess.
A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. EdStJ: His HoG in the past has been rather richer/lusher than this '15. This is a much more nervous rendition of HoG, yet still packs all the aromas & flavors of previous versions.

HoG-a wine I have never bought much of, as I dedicated my funds to R&G and Syrah.

Always like it when I drink it.
