Fess up...

I'm planning on US Pinot Noir. Most likely Littorai and/or Rhys. There will also be bubbly, probably Ultramarine.

Don't know yet! We're having Tday with some geek friends down in Snohomish, so the choices will matter. Amber is super geeky and has been studying Burgundy of late, but dang--this is the most American of holidays. I can't imagine not bringing American wine.

Pinot and Riesling are my standard recommendations, because they strike me as the red and the white, respectively, most versatile at a table that has tons of different flavors on it. Right now it appears that we'll be out for two holiday dinners, thus doing nothing at home, but I'm sure I'll take wine and I'm sure it will be Pinot. Or Beaujolais. But French, anyway. I'm not feeling real good about celebrating America these days.

Bubbly is such a good idea. We have the German in laws in town for the week and various wines will be opened, but not sure what will lead on Thursday.

Someone gave me an NV Nicolas Feuillatte so I thought about starting with that. But I have some 2010 Rieslings from Hirtzberger and Knoll that may be more delicious.

ESJ Durell is a strong candidate for red, but I’ve been itching to open one of the 2015 Fourrier village Gevreys so that will need to happen at some point soon.

Specifics probably depend on mood and menus. But we don’t eat turkey (or any of the mainstream thanksgiving dishes) so the typical Thanksgiving pairing issues don’t apply.

Will see.

We tend to do Thanksgiving on our own and December holidays with family, so we don't usually do turkey. This year I think I'm going to do a porchetta-style pork shoulder roast with mixed roasted root vegetables; the wine shortlist at the moment includes an '01 Elio Grasso Barolo (Gavarini Chiniera), a '97 Tempier Migoua, an '02 Roumier village Chambolle, and a '93 ESJ California Syrah from the library sale.

I have two Terrapin Pinot Noirs, Two Chinons, three Wagner Rieslings and a Chardonnay as well as plenty of sparkling cider for the kids and non-drinkers. Mind you that is just for the sit-down portion of the dinner (40 people). There will be plenty of wine and spirits drunk through out the day including some Loire Cremants and a rose Cava. (Jeannette's large family are Mayflower descendants so Thanksgiving is a big deal!)

If you set up a small side table for the wines you can call it Terrapin Station. ;)

That would be funnier as most of my family will be down next Saturday to watch the Penn State - Maryland foot ball game. I have rabid Penn State relatives in my family. I am the black sheep because I went to Pitt.

Gruet vintage bubbly (deeply discounted at the NH State Liquor Store), and a well-aged Burgundy grand cru (haven't decided which one yet).

My friends are serving braised beef, so probably a deep red. Thinking the 2009 Syrah from Bonny Doon I just tasted in Davenport yesterday afternoon. Maybe a cabernet or two. I have some Rhone whites I could serve (Lady Preston). Riesling sounds good. Think our friends may bring Pinot, but it might be nice to serve one of the new IPOB pinots we have discovered!

Oh...and an amazing Tilted Shed cider or two!

The whole Thanksgiving weekend is ruined for me since, due to Black Friday, it's the busies weekend of the year for me.

Okay, I chose my wines. My host is opening a very fine champagne so my original choice, a '90 Cristal, isn't going anywhere. I think it likelier to be closer to dead than very alive (I had six bottles, and the results have been 3 and 2 respectively), I don't want to risk showing that up. So I'm taking a bottle of the finest champagne I've had from this state, Analemma on the Columbian Gorge, an 08 Stony Hill Chardonnay and an 07 Copain Gary's Syrah, both from California. Neither grape is represented among what the host or other guests are serving, so why not.

Zero reason a 1990 Cristal should be past it. Wonder what happened.

We wound up opening a 2007 Reserve Pinot Noir from Damiani (Finger Lakes). I was a bit worried that this would be past it, perhaps the generous oak of its youth overwhelming the fruit. So it was a pleasant surprise to find this wine still alive and kicking - bright cherry and strawberry fruit with lots of spicy notes, which went well with richer foods.

2015 Lyut Pipeño Yumbel. One liter bottle. Cloudy, fluorescent pink color, fruity with some tartness. Perfect match for the variety of traditional Thanksgiving items on the table.
