WTN: 2020 Dr. Hermann EH AR GK Spätlese: Perfect

A corked bottle of Spätburgunder left me scrambling for something easy and food flexible. Decided on the 2020 Dr. Hermann Erdener Herzlei Alte Reben Goldkapsel Riesling Spätlese and it was perfect. These days I don't drink much full-tilt middle mosel spätlese, but this had all the sweet red strawberry note fruits combined with clear mineral lace to avoid getting too opulent. A lovely combination of dense firm old vine structure (or is that the power of suggestion from the label), and juicy lip-smacking character.

Perfect with food, perfect to drink, a perfect bottle to empty on a spring evening.

I have heard a lot of good things about Dr. Hermann, but have not yet tried any. I think I was put off by first seeing them in Total Wine, and thinking they were some custom labelled things.

Yes, I often get turned off when wines/spirits are available in Total Wine. And the corny old fashioned (in a bad way) label doesn't help either.

But they get glowing reviews from MFW and one of my key Berlin wine merchants, so it was worth a try. And well worth it!

I should add, 130-year old ungrafted vines and a 22euro price tag, on top of the strong recs, made me think I couldn’t really go too wrong.
