WTN: Courbis St. Joseph 2003

by Matt Richman » Wed Aug 15, 2007 10:17 pm

Rich and deep purple fruit with lots of burnt rubber, chocolate and espresso. Tobacco and wet earth as well. Long dark bitter finish with some tacky lingering oak. Hits with a lot of power up front, and a bit hot. Certainly a hot weather wine, a bit rough. A lot of punch for the price, but not a lot of subtlety or excitement.

Sounds like the heat of that summer was a bit much for it. I've enjoyed this in past ('98 and '00 I think), more so than the Courbis Cornas.

I actually really like Courbis' St.-Joseph Blanc quite a bit, because I'm kind of into white Rhones and ever since JL Grippat became enveloped by Guigal after 1998, there's a real need for a yummy St.-Jospeh Blanc...
