Ouch, Redwinger, I empathize. I don't know what I'm facing. I have a "biomechanical" problem in my cycling that is bothering me. Still..no pain killers needed (yet) so I will bring wine to dinner.

I'm thinking a 1999 Joeph Phelps Syrah that had an intriguing shelf talker note. Maybe a Merlot Rossato from Solano County. Maybe I'll even bring out that bottle of 2000 Dominus I got a wonderful price on.

Howie, I am happy that you enjoyed the B-J. That is one very very good pink isn't it. Sure wish you could come to Semi-Cool.

There is always someone with a naughty turn of mind. B-J is for Bone Jolly.

I'm trying really hard not to take the Vicodin unless absolutely needed.

Bill,

Very sorry to hear about your injury. I agree with staying away from the Vicodin if you are able. I've taken for pain in the past and can understand how it becomes a lifestyle.

Good luck.

Steve, that settles it, I'll be opening a Bone-Jolly in honor of your birthday tomorrow. (It IS the elixer of youth, no?)
And you can be sure that there will be several rousing choruses of "For he's a jolly good fellow" sung in your name, at Semi-Cool with glasses of ESJ raised high!

Happy happy. Joy joy!

Opened a bottle of Caol Ila 12-year-old single malt. Doesn't have so much peatiness, smooth, but has a decidedly medicinal frangrance and taste. Not sure I will buy this again, but my mind could change by the time I finish the bottle (could be a while, generally takes me a couple of months to go through a bottle of whisky).

Actually the Wine of the Weekend was last night - Friday. My brother Steve's wife has a friend whose husband likes to fish and doesn't like salmon.

I don't understand.

Anyway, he caught some salmon in Alaska last week and Steve scored a couple of tail filets, which he marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, dill and garlic and grilled.

I brought a bottle of Suncé Rodella vineyard, Russian River Valley, Pinot Noir 2005. It's very ripe, very balanced. Cloves and a bit of dill, but it might well have been the dilled salmon that perked that up. More than a little oak and more than a little acid, it opened nicely over an hour.

The salmon and the wine could have been made for each other.

I'm keeping the other bottle for about 5 or 6 years. Bought at the winery in September '06 for $40. The bottle says they made 12 barrels.

(That's about the top of my price range. I squeak when it costs that much. The moths in my wallet whine a lot.) (Isn't it interesting how chatty some bottles can be?)

Steve, happy birthday! You need to do what I do--a day is just not enough for indulging in fine wine, especially in summer. You need a birthfortnight--start exactly one week before and go for one week after.

It's too late! My birthday is Sunday! Maybe I'll just have to accelerate while I celebrate! :D

Well, I'm a week late in giving my advice (although I've made it within the fortnight, at least), but for "big" birthdays, I see nothing wrong with milking the celebrations as long as possible. For my 40th, I was wined and dined for a solid month--slightly over, in fact, since I did start early and had a couple of extra events the following month!

Hope you had a great weekend, and that you're able to continue to enjoy yourself.

Happy belated birthday,
Kristen
