WTN: 2003 Foot of Africa Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (Western Cape, SA)

Bottled at Kleine Zalze Estate in Stellenbosch; $18.85 at Vintages.

14% alc./vol. Deep, dark garnet colour; very dark at the core. Legs form readily and are persistent. Enjoyable smoky-leather/iodine/coal-fire nose, much like that which I get in many SA Pinotages. Some Cabernet berry fruit atop a green bell-pepper streak; the texture is warm, ripe and alcoholic. This combination of hefty alcoholic heat and a bit of Cabernet greenness makes me think that the fruit here might have ripened a tad too quickly for Cab's finer flavours to fully develop. A bit of subtle oak spice lurks backstage. Full, expansive, hot palate-feel with considerable residual sugar, but crisp acidity (don't know if this was acidified?) makes for decent balance. I know that there would be days when I wouldn't care for this type of wine, but today isn't one of them. I expect that tomorrow, the remainder will come into better integration and it should make for a nice drink with supper.
