WTN: Pesquera Crianza 2001

100% tempranillo from Ribera del Duero. This bottle was pulled out from the coolest corner of my cellar and it showed that it had not evolved relative to the time of release. Rather timid nose, with a hint of the typical Pesquera dusty smell. Medium body, 13.5% abv. Cherries, dust, iron and beef blood. Tightly structured and unforgiving. My rule of thumb is to drink Pesquera crianza at 5 to 10 years of age, and Pesquera reserva after 10 years, but this one appears to be built for aging longer than usual. I have a good stash of this wine and, if this bottle is representative, I won't touch another one for at least three years or more. The elements are there, however, for the wine to evolve into something very good, i.e. into one of the best crianzas from this winery. My suggestion is to let it sleep.
