Looking for advice on particular Burgundy wines

by Nicholas Grenier » Sat Sep 01, 2007 4:41 pm

We recently brought in a few special order red Burgundy wines from the Rosenthal portfolio for our shelves at THE CLOWN. The rarity of some of these wines makes for an exciting offering to the public, but the challenge is in finding information to help sell them. I can get by rattling off general vintage and appellation characteristics, but beyond that, I'm unsure of what's inside the bottles. The Rosenthal website isn't as helpful as I would hope either. I was wondering if there are any experienced Burg-fans out there would be able to offer some advice on the following wines. I'm also eyeing them for my personal collection as well, but as a fresh college graduate with a plethora of school loans, any purchase of a bottle over $30 requires a very solid recommendation.

2000 Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay Taillepieds - $59.99

2003 Francois Gaunoux Pommard "Les Tavannes" - $49.99

2001 Jerome Chezeaux Nuits-St-Georges "Aux Boudots" - $52.99

Jean-Marc Morey Santenay "Grand Clos Rousseau" - $45.99

Thank you in advance!

Welcome again, Nick (Nick is a close friend of Amy and myself)!

I certainly have vintage experience and vineyard experience (with Boudots and Taillepieds) but I cannot remember ever having these specific producer bottlings.

I'm sure there are those here who have, and who would be happy to help you.

Best,
Joe

I forgot to mention that the Jean-Marc Morey is 2001.

Joe, glad that you're back. I'm sure you had a marvelous time in Piedmont. I hope Amy enjoyed herself as well. :)

Not familiar with the wines, but loved the Clown in Belfast when we lived in Searsport. Will have to hit their Portland digs.

We've actually just opened a new store on US Route 1 in York. It's just like Belfast, except with more wine! Now you have no excuse not to stop by.

Amy enjoyed herself just fine. We just spent the last five minutes running around the house because she wanted to throw away a wedge of goat cheese that had a spot of mold on it. I locked her out of the house and she dipped the cheese in the toilet.

Why didn't anyone tell me married life would be like this?

Okay, I'll bite. How did she dip the cheese in the toilet if she was locked out of the house? :D

Well, first she threw the cheese out the door (still in a ziplock bag) so I locked her out until she promised to give me the cheese. I left her outside to think about it for a while (returning to the kitchen) but forgot about the spare key hidden in the garden. She ran in an dipped the cheese in the toilet.

Amy, 1 - Joe, 0

I could eat it just to spite her, I'm sure it is no worse than Stinking Bishop at this point, but I'll let her have this victory.

Nicholas,

I have tasted the 2001 Jean-Claude Boisset Santenay "Grand Clos Rousseau". It was tasted in February of 2006. My note says, "Ripe cherry with some earth in the background. Relatively short, tart finish. Weak QPR ($32 US)"

The vintages are rather undesireable (which doesn't make them bad, only harder to sell), no wonder Rosenthal still had stock on them. Jean-Marc Morey is perhaps the best producer in the bunch and better known for Chassagne-Montrachet (as one would hope) than Santenay. I haven't personally tasted the others, but Bitouzet-Prieur has a good reputation. I wouldn't really bother purchasing any for your own cellar. The 2001's aren't getting better and 2003 only made Pommard that much more frankenstein.

First of all, welcome.

My wife played the Portland chamber music festivals a couple seasons, the Clown was best wine store I found (unfortunately did not find till 2nd season). Definitely best gallery/antique/wine store combo I ever found! :)
I especially liked some $5 Jermann closeouts. Good Italian choices overall.

I think 2000 provides some nice (mostly) early drinking wines. Heard good things re Bitouzet-Prieur, haven't tried. But probably would pass at $60.
Don't know Francois Gaunoux, though I like Domaine Michael Gaunoux. But I wouldn't buy any 2003 Burg without tasting, just not my style.
Don't know Chezeaux, but while 2001 was iffy in CdBeaune, pretty strong in CdN. But best at top level, and as I said I don't know Chezeaux or Boudots vineyard. No matter the vintage, $46 is a lot of money for a Santenay!
