WTN: 2004 Night & Day Blend A to Z Oregon Red Wine Oregon.

2004 Night & Day Blend A to Z Oregon Red Wine Oregon. "The fact of twilight does not mean you cannot tell night from day." Samuel Johnson. $8.50 a glass at Endless Vines, Franklin Lakes.

A very intersting blend of grapes -- deep red color, deep hue, forward, lifting aromas of fruit, spice, earth, chocolate and more, very good fruit tastes with many flavor notes, medium mouth feel, smooth tannins, good acidity, very good balance, long, complex finish. A very pretty and interesting wine, and a winery to follow, especially at this price point of $20 a bottle, discounted to $16 or so in this area. 4*.

think the complexity of this wine would make it an interesting match with a wide variety of foods. In my imagination, omelets, especially western styles, seem very appropriate.

Notes:

A really fun website, nicely presented. "Aristocratic Wines at Democratic Prices".

Winery:

Mostly showcasing Southern Oregon’s pristine Del Rio and Abacela Vineyards, A to Z’s 2004 Night & Day is comprised in the main of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah, Dolcetto,
Petit Verdot, Nebbiolo and Tempranillo were blended in for complexity, heightened aromatics and interest. 100% barrel-aged with some new wood for almost 18 months; 5,000 cases were bottled in
September 2006.

TN: Saturated dark blood-red color from the rim to a near opaque center. Strong complex initial aromas of cassis, pepper, slate, iron, black berries, cocoa, smoke, chocolate-covered cherries, pencil shavings and tar. As the wine opens, aromas of cedar, cookie dough, truffles, ripe plums and red currants emerge. In the mouth, the attack mirrors the initial aromatics with juicy, focused red and black fruits. As the wine continues to move across the palate, ripe tannins lend focus and balance to the lush and generous fruit. The concentrated succulent mid-palate gives shape and great depth to the wine as it moves to the finish. The final flavors end on a strong note of bittersweet cocoa.

A to Z Wineworks is a partnership of two winemaking families. Sam Tannahill is a Burgundy-trained winemaker and was formerly winemaker at Archery Summit. Sam's wife, Cheryl Francis, also trained in Burgundy and New Zealand and was formerly winemaker for Chehalem. William Hatcher developed and managed Domaine Drouhin Oregon for fourteen years from its inception in 1987. Debra Hatcher has been involved in the Oregon wine industry for over 20 years including an early stint with Papa Pinot at The Eyrie Vineyards. Northwest Core Collections.

Impressive growth, all under screwcaps:

2002: 2,600 cases
2003: 11,000 cases
2004: 23,000 cases
2005: 78,000 cases
2006: 120,000 cases

Thanks Bob R for this post. A to Z is starting to gain some shelf space up here in AB. Perhaps Jenise can add some info for us all!
