Comments on Barefoot Cellars?

I see that the Barefoot Cellars line of wines (Gallo) have appeared in Ontario: Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. They all retail for $9.95.

I seem to recall seeing some reviews many years ago in the Wine Spectator that indicated they offered decent value for money. What do people on the board think?

I have had a couple and liked them, as did my wife. Disclaimer - I am not a sophisticated oenophile (yet!), and what I find good a more refined palate may not.

Bruce, back when Barefoot was owned by Davis Bynum it was a decent lower cost wine. In fact that decency ran through the whole lineup, but I in particular thought the cabernet was a fair drop for the money. Now?????? who knows.

I think the wines are decent. I prefer Little Penguin which is in the same price catagory. I think I've had the Merlot and the Cab. I also tried the Chardonnay sparkling wine last December and that was nice.

Whoa. There's a name from the past, when it was an independent company. Haven't seen that bottom of a foot on a label for a long time. I may be looney here, but I think I remember that they had a southern rhone style wine for about $5 that was light and lively and pretty decent, and a zin that was actually pretty good. But, gosh, that was 6 or 7 years ago, pre Gallo (if that's what they are now) so who knows???? I thought the label just disappeared. Actually, maybe that was wishful thinking. The bottom of the foot looked a lot like the symbol for the North Carolina Tarheels, absent the tar on the heel, and as a loyal Duke Blue Devil, it was not totally appreciated here. I hope that Gallo has abandoned that look.

I pour wines part-time. I have poured a lot of Barefoot wine. I consider it dreck of the worst sort. If I want that kind of flavor I will drink Mountain Dew or Coke. (Not diet either, but the full sugared stuff!)

Like others, my experience with Barefoot was late 80's back when Davis Bynum owned the brand...wouldn't apply now.

Only had the Chardonnay, a little sweet and a lot characterless I thought

Thanks for the warnings. Will invest my hard-earned $9.95 elsewhere.

Ooohh. 1982. New Orleans. UNC v. Georgetown. Errant late pass. Michael Jordan. We were there. Great year for the tarheels, 32-2 I think. Bad year for Duke.
You guys look loaded again. Hopefully not as much as last year, but loaded.
