WTN: All over the place

More from the backlog . . .

Quinta do Penassais 1995 Garrafeira Dão, $12
A little bit of VA on the nose but otherwise nice red fruits with gravelly earth. On the palate, somewhat rustic, briary red fruits are surprisingly robust considering the age of the wine, and they are accented with dusty earth and minerals. Seems a bit rustic but terrific with food, which seems to add some herbal elements as well. Excellent match with red beans and rice.

José Maria da Fonseca 2001 Terras do Sado Periquita, $10
Plummy fruit with herby, minty, tobacco accents on the nose and palate. Smooth, medium acidity, reasonably pleasant. OK match with leftover linguine carbonara. The next day, it is a bit better with some black cherry added to the plum fruit and some minerals showing up more. It went well with salmon cakes. Importer: Palm Bay Imports.

Weingut Glatzer 2004 Carnuntum Blaufrankish, $13
Excellent wine. Great nose with black cherry fruit, flowers, herbs, a little smoke and a lot of spice. On the palate, there is black cherry fruit with lots of spice, along with some herbs and earth. Very nicely structured with good acidity and a reasonably smooth texture. Really enjoyable wine and excellent with pizza.

Caro 2000 Mendoza
The nose seems to me to be a cross between Bordeaux and California with lots of cedary aromas, some dusty earth and some black cherry/cassis fruit. On the palate, there is more black cherry and cassis fruit with lots of cedar and dusty earth. It has good structure. The oak (showing up here in cedary scents and flavors) is more than I’d like but not bad and not unbalanced. Excellent match with fajitas. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec blend, with a majority of the former.

Groot Constantia 2005 Constantia Rood Estate
, $12
This is quite interesting and more enjoyable than I expected with rich, moderately intense red berry fruit, a bit sweet but not over-the-top-jammy, with some oak intruding but not too much, and a hefty dose of earthiness and spice that is appealing. It has decent acidity and smooth texture. Went fine with a variety of appetizers. This is a field blend made from a bunch of different grapes all grown on the wine’s estate. Importer: 57 Main Street.
