WTN: Two Israeli wines

1999 Domaine du Castel Grand Vin; heralded as the best Castel ever, this was supposed to be fruity and structured; I found it thin and green. It opened up a bit towards the end but was still a weak effort. Disappointing,

2002 Flam Cabernet Reserve; much better. Fuller body, brighter fruit, structure, good finish. Really good. Similar to what California used to produce in the early nineties. Very nice; probably along with some of the older Yarden Reserve offerings my favorite wine from Israel.

Interesting. I've had some terrible Israeli wines at a kosher Indian restaurant in Nyc (Pongal), but I'm sure that was primarily a function of their selection.

What was the grape(s) on the Castel?

I tried to ask Daniel Rogov, the Israeli wine critic but he hasn't answered yet. I believe it is usually 70% cab 30% merlot but there may be a small percentage of petit verdot added some years.
