WTN: Deja Vilmart

by David M. Bueker » Mon May 29, 2006 12:55 pm

By total luck, I managed to open the exact same wine on the exact same day, a year apart. So here's both notes:

  • N.V. Vilmart Champagne Rubis - France, Champagne (5/28/2005)
The most Burgundian Champagne I have ever tasted. Loads of red fruit, but also an distinct earhtiness, and yes a touch of brett funk. It's sparkling premier cru red burg! Wow yummy.
  • N.V. Vilmart Champagne Rubis - France, Champagne (5/28/2006)
Not nearly as exuberant as the bottle I had exactly a year ago (from the same batch/same purchase). Perhaps I left it in the cellar a bit too long. It's still a very nice wine, but the fruit has toned down a little more than I prefer in my rose Champagne. Still a bit of earth, but the funk is gone (a good thing). Very tasty and easy to drink, but it was better a year ago.

David,
Good thing it was the last bottle. What's next for Rose Champagne, a N.V. Roger Pouillon et Fils Brut Rosé 1er Cru? :D

Nah. I had that three weeks ago. Maybe something from Duval-Leroy.

Do you guys get the Camille Saves Rose Champagne in New England? Curious as to how it compared to the Vilmart pink champers. I think it qualifies as a very burgundian sparkler.

I have not seen that one Marc. Who's the importer? I will look for it.

I think it is a Becky Wasserman selection, but a google search shows the wine listed on the Polaner website. It is a totally dry masculine style rose champagne that I liked better than the Billecart Salmon rose (which is pretty damn good too) when I had the chance to taste them together. It was about $45 local retail. Others preferred the BS, more of a style difference I think.
