I got a coupla' bottles of wine as a gift this weekend, and I've never heard of either one. 2004 Robert Pecota Winery Single Vineyard Selection Monterrey County Syrah, and 2004 Bernard Griffin Colombia Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. What might I expect and what do I do with them? Drink now, lay down for 10 years, flush? Thanks
Robert Pecota is a reasonably well-regarded winery, my guess is your syrah will be quite enjoyable. The winery's page about the wine doesn't indicate aging, so there's no reason to wait.
Don't know anything about the Washington producer, though Columbia River cabernet sauvignon is often underripe and overoaked for my taste.
Bernard-Griffen can make nice wines, but they tend to be rather effusive in their use of oak. I'd leave it alone for a few years to let it integrate. They usually make modern style wines (big, extracted, etc.).
I do remember a couple of vineyard designated merlots (heaven forbid, Kara's?) that were quite remarkable in the mid '90's plus an extraordinary dessert wine, what they might have called a Vin Santo (white IIRC), equally extraordinary.
