WTN: 20 year old Provencal Cab and Tissot Poulsard

by Brian K Miller » Mon Jan 28, 2008 12:26 pm

Had a fantastic 1986 Mas de Daumas Gaussac Cabernet Sauvignon blend (75%-the rest was a kitchen sink of grapes, including PINOT NOIR!) from Provence Saturday night. What a delicious, funky red. Definitely some funky, savory notes going on-I have to admit that I like a good bit of Brett, so this was plenty fine to me. Despite the age, there was still plenty of nice red and black currant fruit. The aforementioned savoriness provided a delicious finish. AND-I know that Provence was hot, but this wine was so lively and energetic, with great palate stimulating acidity. EXPENSIVE but perhaps worth it ($112 at Terroir Wine Bar  ). 18/20!

Also: Tissot Arbois Poulsard. Now THIS was delicious as well. Very lifted nose-red raspberry, acidity evident on the nose, and more interesting savory and funky brett to add quirkiness. I have to admit I kept smelling this wine. I could see the WineTV guy doing a big sniffy sniff here. (I like a little Brett...so) The nose carried over on the palate as well-very bright raspberry. Another very light and lively wine-achingly lively, with great acidity, a blast of raspberry and cranberry fruit, and the savory edge from the nose finishing off the palate. Delicious and intriguing-we all kept smelling this baby! 17.5/20+

Otto would love this wine, I think!

Sounds like you're drinking well. Kudos to Terroir.

I have enjoyed Tissot's Savagnin, Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, so yes, I think I would enjoy the Poulsard also as I have loved some other producers' Poulsards. Sadly it isn't available here. Have you had the Damas Gassac Blanc ever?

Never tried the Blanc, Otto.

I did pick up a bottle of the 2005 red last Fall on a recommendation, but based on this experience that night, limited as it was, I am guessing the 2005 won't be ready for five to ten years.

Thank you for the notes.
As I am always curious to learn about new wines from unexpected regions, especially a Provencal cabernet, I googled the Mas de Daumas winery and found that the winery is not in Provence. They are in the neighboring Languedoc region.

The wine still sounds like a winner, though. :)

It's not Provencal, it's provincial Languedoc  and it can be very good indeed. So can Tissots Poulsard. It is IMO his best of the reds. The 04 sans soufre is even better.

Thanks, Brian, I got a good laugh out of that. If you were to see Aniane in the Herault, where Daumas Gassac is located, you'd realize how comical that image is.
