WTN: 2001 Pichon Baron, Pauillac

by R Cabrera » Mon Jan 28, 2008 9:25 pm

2001 Chateau Pichon Baron, Pauillac

Excellent complex nose of cigar, fruit, pencil, leather and slight hint of vanilla - just as how I always seem to remember Pichon Baron.
Well-balanced, fresh acidity, round tannin, ripe and firm fruit. One deliciously-good Bordeaux with lean and silky mouthfeel that's drinking well even when it was just popped-and-poured.
Long, lingering and tasty finish. A-/A

BTW, I seem to have come upon a few Bordeaux 2001s that, lately, have been quite approachable.

Sounds lovely. Cellared since release? I ask because I've had numerous wines out of my (cold) cellar that are less approachable than what I read about on the information firehose.

Well, I remember purchasing a 6-pack from Zachys (edited: purchased at $39 then, I think that was the release price), immediately sent 5 to my offsite storage, and kept the remaining lone bottle in my cold 56-bottle wine storage unit at home since then. The only reason that I drank it now was to create rack space.

Thanks. Very useful information then.

Anyone tried the 2000? A decade was suggested (from 2005, that is), but...I am intrigued.

that $39/bottle looks pretty nice - isn't his wine normally 50s/60s?

$39 does look nice, but that was 3+ years ago.

Don't do it. I haven't opened any of mine since 2004, but it had already closed down then, and reports elsewhere from those I trust suggest it is not back from vacation yet.
