WTN: 2005 Jean Marechal Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Évèque

by David M. Bueker » Tue Feb 19, 2008 8:38 pm

2005 Domaine Jean Marechal Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Évèque - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey 1er Cru (2/19/2008)
A test bottle bought to check out the producer who I know nothing about, and the vineyard that I know nothing about. All I know is that the wine comes from the planet closest to the sun. ;^)

A ruby red color is followed up by very grapey aromatics with just a hint of earth and leather. In the mouth it's a cherry/berry/grape explosion that is completely primary with no complexity whatsoever. But it's still quite the ride. It actually reminds me more of Beaujolais than Bourgogne, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. Fun wine, but I'm not sure I want to pay $25+ for something I can get in Beaujolais for $20 or less.

I was gonna say! Remember the good 'old' days (5 years ago) when Mercurey, and PC at that, was $15? Montagny 1er Cru used to be $12. The Chalonnaise still offers some pretty ridiculous value.

Before discount this bottle was $27.99, and I can get Bourgogne that is significantly more interesting for that or less from producers like Chevillon, Groffier, Drouhin, etc.

There's still quite a bit of good Beaujolais that stays south of $20. Remember that I am buying on the east coast, but not in a major city.

thanks for notes. I saw Marechal in title, but then realized not Claude and Catherine. $28 for Mercurey, yikes.
