WTN: You only live once ('98 DRC Richebourg)

by David M. Bueker » Sun Mar 02, 2008 8:36 pm

Had dinner this evening with my folks. Dad's 65th birthday is coming up, and he had once said that he wanted to taste a Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wine some day. Back when he said it I picked up this bottle to share "in the future." The future was tonight. I made braised beef roast, and opened the wine about 45 minutes before dinner, keeping it at a cool serving temperature, and letting it open up over the course of the meal.

1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg
Immediately after opening I poured three small glasses (Dad, Mom and me - Laura doesn't do red wine...ok, more for us). Right out of the bottle it was magical, with lots of red fruit, new leather and spices. The depth and concentration on the nose was just amazing. Initially it was both tight and tannic on the palate, but the breed and class were completely apparent. Once dinner was served we kept taking small pours, letting the wine change in the glass. While the aromas and flavors did not change much they deepened and expanded, the wine taking on an even bigger, yet always elegant and regal, personality. It was clear what makes DRC wine special. The wine was a fantastic match with the beef, the richness of the slow braised meat setting off the richness of the wine. Every sip was better than the last. No disappointment here, but rather an experience that lived up to the hype and augmented the occasion.

Happy birthday to your Dad. Wine can make you happy. Sometimes a great wine can leave you spellbound!
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

David - great story.

My dad recently turned 61 and there's nothing better than bonding over food and wine. Glad it showed well!

Bob - I would suggest looking around for a Zilliken 'Butterfly' Riesling.

Hi David,

Thanks for sharing.

How would you rate the wine in terms of its evolution.

Was it on its plateau, near its plateau, far from its plateau???

All the best,
Alex R.

Alex - I think this wine is still a good 5 years from even approaching its plateau. That said it was not forbidding, just undeveloped.

Or Baumard's Clos du Papillon?

I quite enjoyed the '98 Burgundies we had in our tasting group several years ago. The DRCs we had were wonderful. I liked how tannic and less voluptious the wines were compared to the '99 that we had tasted a bit earlier (the '99s were great also, but a totally different style - and probably a more popular style). My memory of the Richebourg was that it was a bit of a masculine wine when compared to the others, more brooding, darker. It was like a sibling of La Tâche. In the '98, '01, '02 and '04 tastings I have found two styles for DRC: one is a red toned, elegant, bright style exemplified by Ech, RSV and RC, whereas the other is a darker, spicier, more brooding and masculine style which is exemplified by GE, Richebourg and Tâche. I am happy to see that your note would fit into my hypothesis of the grander scheme! :) But only five years more? Not having tasted any older Richebourgs (only RSV and La Tâche), I can't say anything for sure, but I'm surprised if it is mature then.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

If it was 30+ years old maybe. I'll try her on my bottle of 2001 Richebourg in 2031 (...when I'm 64).

And Otto - 5 years to even begin the maturity plateau is what I meant. It will need 10-15 more for full maturity.

Hopefully yes to #1.

As for #2 - I'm the cook.

I just got home and saw the thread. The wine was wonderful. There is not anything more that can be said. I took the bottle for my wine cellar.
