Heatwave in Europe! Could this be a repeat of 2003?

Authorities fear current heatwave in parts of Europe could rival 2003....

Bordeaux under the blow torch....

The latest heatwave was expected to continue and even get worse this week, forecasters said, with temperatures as high as 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) in the southwest and centre-west.

Too soon to say. The peak in 2003 was in August after a torrid periods in June and a more reasonable July.

We are sweltering here today at 35°C (95°F), but storms are on their way from West (probably already in Bordeaux) and some easing off to 29/30°C (approx 85°F) is forecast from tomorrow. The forecasts out 10 day (for what they are worth) are also for slightly cooler temperatures.

No way to repeat 2003. Three years ago the heat started by May with ten days of over 30°C in Austrian winegrowing regions, the heat lasting well into September, i.e. some 120 days of heat.

In 2006, we had snow in May and a rather dismal June.

Dear God, I hope not. I would like some good wine made.
