WTN: Delas Freres St. Joseph Sainte-Epine

by Diane (Long Island) » Thu Aug 31, 2006 11:49 pm

This has been a wine that we have enjoyed over the past few years. However, a bottle opened last summer seemed to indicate it was fading. Tonight, I opened our last bottle, and it was the best. Aromas of roasted meat, leather, and roses burst from the glass. Chewy mouthfeel - black pepper, grilled steak, and cherries. Nice lingering finish, no rush to drink up, but no reason not to.

Very nice note, Diane. We tend not to see many notes on northern Rhones on this forum. Perhaps it's a question of quality price ratio? How would you estimate the QPR on this one? Your note certainly encourages me to take the plunge some St. Joseph!

Dave - St. Joseph tends to be a more reasonably priced Northern Rhone in comparison to Cote Rotie and Hermitage. My records show that I paid $25 three years ago, and while not cheap, it was worth it for this wine from 1999, which was a strong year in the N. Rhone
