One more 2nd hand blind tasting! :)

by Saina » Tue Nov 07, 2006 2:24 pm

This one follows very quickly because today is the only day this week that I can open up a wine at home: tomorrow and Thursday I have tastings and the weekend is taken with the Bin 28 2003. So I made a neutral dinner of, (yawn for many, but I like it) as it goes with all wines, mushroom risotto and opened up the bottle to go with it. I decanted it during the dinner preparations so it has now had an hour of air.

The colour is a deep red, but light in hue (i.e. very see through) - just like it should be.

The nose is rather stern despite the decanting, but that is typical for this producer. It is very red toned and vegetal with lingonberries being prominent, yet it also has a very ripe, almost strawberry-like, character. It is earthy, mineral, almost metallic and salty.

The palate has very high acidity and is more tannic than expected from the grape (but once again, is typical for the producer). The acids and tannins somewhat mask the fruit, but the fruit is very ripe and sweet. The palate is very fresh and moreish.

The aftertaste is almost interminable, though fruit sluts will say it is tart. A very good wine and IMO typical of the area and the producer. Very unspoofulated.

What is it? I can't promise a T shirt (the printing of it costs like hell over here!) for whoever comes closest, but if shipping costs aren't prohibitive, I'll send one bottle of the wine in question! :)

-O-(p.s. I haven't entered this onto my page of CT so no one can cheat, lol!!)

Why has nobody guessed Musar!

And it would be very sly of a Musar-lover like Otto not to even mention the VA and Brett infection, pawning them off as descriptors of "fresh acidity" and "mineral" :)

Good one Rahsaan but you know what he might just throw in something else from that area. Whats that winery that begins with "K"? I am still thinking Italian.

Here is that winery.....Kefraya. Where is Arnt?

Could be burgundy. Either gamay or pinot noir. If the latter Volnay (d'Angerville) or Chambolle

I had to google lingonberries..not a descriptor I have used. Cranberry like and used a lot in Scan. Yeah, I know Bob is waffling!

Howie, good guess, but no. This just doesn't have the sweet juiciness of Bojos.

Mark, no, I think the East Coast drinks it all, so none is seen in Finland.

Robin, again a good guess (and you have been sneakily reading what's available here! ;) ), but no. This didn't have a leafy and herbal character.

Rahsaan, no funk and no shit. It's not Musar.

Bob, not Italian, French is correct. I'll explain later why your guess is a good one, but I won't do it now, because it will give away too many hints.

Arnt, you're on the right tracks but not Volnay, not Chambolle not Bojo.

Ok, deduction time here after Otto`s brief appearance. France, sounds like P Noir from Arnts reply, could be the Loire as Otto fond of this appellation.

I do not see enough Loire reds here, only the Cab Franc based wines and this ain`t it!! Hows about something from Sancerre..earthy and minerally? That salty might be a good clue.Probably a recent vintage too.

No, only that it was fun to throw in a possible wine that is actually available to you. ;)

Chinon did seem like a possibility based on your report, too, although I wavered between that and Burg. It was your comment about "unusually tannic for the grape" that led me away from Burgundy.

Boss, any experience with my idea of a red Sancerre?? How do they normally taste, me no experience. Berries would fit in, doesn`t metallic tell you something? Thing is here, Otto does not mention violets.

Aren't (now there's a hint if there ever was one, lol!!) there any producers in Burgundy who make tannic and structured wines?

No idea at all.

I'm assuming like most others that it's red burg. I'm assuming this is a fairly serious wine by the structure and although it's possible it's a Loire Cabernet Franc, I'm tending away from that as I'd still expect something a little darker.

So if burgundy, what of the clues. Well atypical (for the region) tannins suggests that the likes of Pommard could be discounted.

Strawberry-like might suggest Savigny-lB?

The hints are also there that this is a top producer, potentially one of the stars or at least mavericks of the region.

Vintage? I don't think it's 03, but decanting without mention of ageing colour suggests a relatively young wine. Why not a 2002.

Let's go the whole hog and say Leroy Savigny les-Beaunes 2002

By the way, I hope others cheat like I've done and flick through Hugh Johnsons pocket book to get producers from the appellation when they can't think of any

Despite my scribbles (or maybe it's obvious from them), this really is pretty random guesswork on my part, due to too little experience in the area!

regards

Ian

:( Trudi doesn't write here, does she? She has good descriptions that actually make sense.

Good guesses, but you missed a few hints. I said I'd send a bottle to the closest guesser. As a student I could not afford Leroy. S-lès-B isn't a bad guess, but no. Remember, I noted a prominent vegetal note which I find typical of this sub-area of Burgundy. You're right though: 2002 is the vintage. Congrats.

So, what appellation, which producer, which vineyard?

Does Hugh list all the tannic producers!!!! No clue here, I am sticking to my Sancerre, an `03. No hope of ID`ing though!! Gotta go to a Rhone/Perrin tasting. Have fun.
