News: "King of Beaujolais" charged with wine scam

by Randy Buckner » Wed Apr 05, 2006 8:47 pm

The man who almost single-handedly created the Beaujolais nouveau phenomenon went on trial yesterday on charges that his company topped up prestigious vintages with cheap wines.

Georges Duboeuf, the self-styled "King of Beaujolais" who is president and director-general of the company that bears his name, is accused of "deception and attempted deception over the origin and quality of wines".

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

So it was only playing fast and loose with blending appellations. I was haf expecting to read that bananas had surreptitiously been sneaked into the fermenting vats. DuBoeuf Beujolais has always tasted as though that were the case. :)

The real King of Beuajolais is Brun, who produces some of the best of the best.

Or maybe a vat of isoamyl acetate, amyl acetate, nitrocellulose falls in every so often...
