WTN: Pinot heaven

Two different pinots in two successive nights.

Saturday night:

We went out to eat with some friends at a local restaurant that has a decent but limited wine list. Quattro is the name of the restaurant. The second pinot came from my cellar and was a recent purchase.

Deep purple red colour, quite dark for a pinot. Nose was expressive and had earthiness with black and tart cherries. Opulent midpalate that just shouted black cherries, with nice acidity and smooth tannins. Long, luxurious finish of black cherries and some nice acidity. Great sipper with good balance. Think Loring Pinot Noir.

With food: Nice match with Mahi-Mahi. Even better match with the roasted grape tomatoes that were on the side. The tomatoes brought out the depth of flavors from the pinot and added another layer of flavor to it.

Sunday night:

Clear ruby red. Again darker than a normal pinot, but not as dark as the previous pinot. Great pinot nose of earthy cherries and a hint of red raspberries. The midpalate speaks of tart cherries and red raspberries with mouthwatering acidity and fine grained tannins. Medium to long finish of cherries and slightly bitter tannins. Great balance with proper burgundian restraint and very different style than the first pinot.

With food: Excellent matched with grilled portobello mushrooms. These mushrooms bring out the fruit in the wine and give you another layer of flavor. Nice match with marinated, grilled, pork tendeloin medallions. Again brings out the fruit, but not as much as the mushrooms.

Restaurant wine: 2008 Chateau St. Jean Pinot Noir, 14.2 % abv

Home wine: 2010 Quail's Gate Pinot Noir, Okanagan Valley, BC, 12.5% abv
