WTN: Ridge Mazzoni '08...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Nov 16, 2012 1:04 pm

Tried last night again:
1. Ridge Mazzoni HomeRanch/Calif/SonomaCnty (50% Zin/49% Carignane/1% PS; 14.5%; 47 brls; Bttld: May 2010;
Drk: 3/10-3/17-3/18: EB) 2008
: Very dark color; quite attractive blackberry/Zin/ripe/cherry/boysenberry strong vanilla/smokey/Ridge oak slight earthy/spicy nose; slightly soft strong blackberry/Zin/boysenberry/spicy slight licorice/pungent/graphite some vanilla/smokey/oak bit hard/tannic attractive flavor; very long ripe/blackberry/Zin/spicy/boysenberry some vanilla/smokey/oak finish w/ some hard tannins; needs 2-6 yrs; not a profound Ridge Zin but certainly quite attractive and will surely improve w/ age. $30.00 (ATP)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. ATP: The Ridge ATP wines continue to frustrate me. This Mazzoni was from my held Summer ATP shipments. I opened it on Tues night because the Nero d'Avola I tried was not very good. When I tried it then, all I could think was "borrrrring". Some simple/pleasant blackberry fruit and classic Ridge oak, but not much else. Tried it again on Wed night...pretty much the same thing. So...with about 1/3'rd of the btl left last night, I thought I'd give it one more chance w/ my grilled peppers. Zowie...it had put on weight, the tannins softened a bit, developed some interesting aromatics. Just by sitting out on my counter in an opened btl for 3 days.
So why do I continue w/ the Ridge ATP?? Partly inertia, I guess. And I did follow their ATP program from the very start. The wines are fairly priced. Yet they are often unthrilling when I first try them, and I just shake my head in puzzlement. And then I'll try an older one...and it knocks my sox off sometimes/oftentimes. The Ridge ATP's have this way of putting on weight and rising up and biting you on the a$$ w/ some btl age. Friggin ATP wines!!

ATP is the Ridge Advance Tasting Program, which has sent out many wonderful wines over the years (and probably a few that weren't so wonderful, but with Ridge, nothing seems to ve very bad!). In NJ, since we can't have wines shipped in yet, we've only tasted a few. A friend uses a CA relative's address, who then ships them on.
It's like a wine club; you join for a certain number of bottles every month or two, and they send them out. Usually smaller production wines but, as I said, usually very interesting and tasty.
