Which spirit would you buy as a gift?

by Hoke » Fri Nov 23, 2012 3:13 pm

It's always tough to get someone a gift for the holidays if the person already possesses most of what they apparently want. Ties, colognes, all that stuff just don't make it.

What about spirits though???

If you were looking for a holiday gift, at different levels of importance (the person, I mean) or price, which spirits would you be most likely to purchase?

(And yes, this may end up in an article I'm possibly writing.)

So, which spirits would you consider particularly good for gift-giving?

Cognac (or Armagnac for the right person), Scotch, maybe a special Bourbon.

Single malt scotch is usually a crowd pleaser.

I have purchased some Pappy Van Winkle Rye, some George T. Stagg Bourbon and some 1987 Armagnac for my sons. That was the easy part now Liz, on the other hand......

Pappy Van Winkle 15 y.o. bourbon was my go to gift for 10 or 15 years. But that has gained cult-like status in these parts and is a tough find the last few years. Cognac is now my go to, unless I get lucky and stumble upon some Pappy.

Personally, I like buying food/wine/spirit gifts for people but it is pretty much entirely dependent on the person I'm giving them to.

For example I just bought a lovely Rhum Agricole as an early holiday gift for a colleague who has done me lots of favors (because he likes rum and doesn't know the Martiniquan versions) but for my in-laws it would be grappa. It all depends.
