Cramant or Le Mesnil?

by Jeff B » Fri Nov 30, 2012 8:34 pm

The creaminess of Cramant or the complexity of Le Mesnil?

I'm in love with both myself... :)

One of the great learning excercises for me has been trying to discern between the two tasting Chardonnay-heavy champagnes from both. I'm still a work in progress.

On the Cramant side are such house favorites as Perrier Jouet Fleur de Champagne, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne and Pol Roger.

On the Le Mesnil side are the legendary wines from Krug and Salon.

For me, it's likely a draw.

Moet et Chandon appears to use Chardonnay from both. As an inexperienced taster, my palate tells me that the Chardonnay in Dom Perignon is more Cramant-like, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know if Dom's Chardonnay is mostly Cramant-based or more Le Mesnil? Or, as I suspect a blend of different villages altogether?
