WTN: 3 Ports

by Tom Troiano » Wed Feb 13, 2013 9:57 am

Some unscientific comments on 3 Ports consumed last Saturday after snow removal.

1977 Dow
Medium light color, some raspberries, tar, bubble gum and cough medicine on the nose. On the palate some cherry fruit, low tannins, low alcohol, medium complexity/length. Not bad but expected a bit more. This bottle didn’t give any evidence that this will improve. Drink now.

1998 Grahams, Malvedos
Certainly more youthful in color than the Dow. Some plums, candy, anise and eucalyptus on the nose. A bit alcoholic and tight but sweet candied fruit and full of life. Could use another 5+ years in the cellar, I suppose.

1983 Taylor
Mature color. A bit of raisin, raspberry, chocolate and liqueur on the nose. Not a masculine port that blows you away with power but a solid enjoyable wine. Low tannins, doesn’t show as alcoholic, some raspberry, licorice and cherry on the palate. Good to very good but not great.

Nice.

But if I had tried to drink 3 Ports after last Saturday's snow removal I am not sure I would be awake yet!

we had 8 people!

We had 1 sparkling wine, 2 dry reds (with take out Chinese) and 3 ports (with cheese, nuts, figs, candied apricots).

Still would have been tough! I had about 2 glasses of German Riesling with dinner and practically fell asleep on the spot.
