Notes from dinner with Jojo and a couple of the guys to show some of the top Barolos brought in by Jojo's shop. All wines double decanted 3 hours prior to dinner.
Brovia Ca'Mia 2007 - Mint and ripe berry on the nose, following through on the palate. Sweet and juicy; even a bit of fruit syrup. Sweet all throughout. Plums and black cherry. David noted black licorice. Good length but a touch of bitterness. A very forward, friendly style. Definitely not textbook Barolo but I enjoyed it anyway. Very good.
Bruno Giacosa Falletto 2007 - At first tight on the nose. Rich, earth, bittersweet chocolate. Firm tannins. After an hour in the glass, starting to open up. Black fruits, blackberry and espresso. Spicy as well. Very complex. This will need a lot of time to soften and integrate. If you must drink it now, it may be best to decant for 6 hours. Needs some coaxing but outstanding once it comes around.
Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia 2007 - Fragrant wood. Meaty, fleshy wine. Strawberries draped with milk chocolate. Sour cherry and raspberry. Very long. Still a little firm on the finish but aside from that, already good to drink. A big, mouth-filling wine but not heavy at all. Well-balanced and showing very well. Excellent.
Paolo Scavino Rocche Dell'Annunziata Riserva 2006 - Quite dark for Barolo. Deep violet. Rich wine. Tobacco and red berries dominate the palate. Very approachable and easy to drink despite still having a bit of tannin on the finish. There is definitely something more lurking beneath the surface but it will take a couple of years before it surfaces. Very tempting but patience will be rewarded. Best to wait a couple of years before giving this a go.Barolos
