WTN: Dinner for four

A Laura and I shared a lovely Saturday evening with Mike & Leslie Shor.

with the comté cheese gougeres
1996 Pol Roger Brut Chardonnay
Still very youthful (the glacial cellar strikes again), with a very deep and rich mouthfeel, especially for a blanc de blancs. Some toastiness on the finish shows that it's not a new release, but it is younger than its years. Delicious and gone in short order.

with leek, spinach and aged gouda frittata
1996 Krug
In no way lerger scaled than the Pol Roger, but longer on the finish and more complex. Also very youthful, and also gone in short order.

with braised beef roast, red quinoa and garlic mashed cauliflower
2004 Vilmart Cuvee Rubis
1978 Ridge Monte Bello

The Vilmart was all about ripe strawberries and red cherries - very mouthfilling and no slouch in a great trio of Champagnes. The Monte Bello showed some deep black fruit, a touch of lingering tannin and a very full finish. It stayed quite fresh for the hour plus that we followed it.

We also had a small glass of 1997 Ridge Geyserville, which was the wine I used in the braise. It's showing very well now, in about a perfect place, combining fruit with dusty leather.

We finished off with a 1996 Kracher TBA #9 Welschriesling that was all about botrytis spice, though not in the least heavy.

A very fun (and filling) night!

Like your selection of champers, although I do not know Vilmart Rubis. Drank my last (of about a dozen) 1996 Pol BdB recently .... just a wonderful wine with no signs of falling over this end, too. Still have a few 1996 Pol Sir Winston and Pol Vintage left. Had some variation with the Sir Winston, no problems with the vintage (or the BdB). 1996 Krug was frightfully expensive at release ... and I believe Australia got a pitiful allocation ..... prices have actually fallen in the last few years .... but I doubt if I can afford it anytime soon. I did buy several of the 1995 Krug for less than half of the price of the '96 some time back. I have one left in the bat cave.

Wow David...I have not even considered broaching any of my 1995 Krug. The 1988 has still not hit the drinking queue.

David,

I have a really odd question - did you stand up the Monte Bello for a few days (because it doesn't look like you did)?

Do you normally stand up a wine like that or do you think its unecessary?

Hi Tom.

Not my bottle, but it had been standing. The stuff you see was stuck to the side of the bottle.
