How many Hugh Johnson Pocket Wine Books do you own?

by Jeff B » Wed Jun 05, 2013 11:46 pm

I love his little pocketbooks and make it a point to buy one each year. I have one for each year going back to 2004. :)

None. That doesn't mean I don't think them good; only that I'm shedding wine publications from my budget rather than adding them.

I've bought them all since 2003, but I've handed out older ones to newbies, to lure them into the fold.

I think I purchased one years ago. I also met Hugh Johnson once at a Les Amis du Vin dinner in Washington, DC.

Two but both of them are pre-1995.

I bought it when it first came out and for a very year afterwards for maybe fifteen years butthen lapsed. I did buy the 30th anniversary 2007 issue, and that' s the most recent I have.

OTOH - I have bought Platter's South African wine guide very year since 1996 and have them all in their multicoloured spines on my shelf here, plus the very first 1980 edition and the tenth anniversary 1990 edition.

One, circa 1998; not good for much anymore!

I wish you had asked this question a couple of years ago, before I donated my older copies to the local library. At that point, I had them all from 1979 through 2013. In the early days, it was a pretty near indispensable reference, and it's still a darn good one, an awful lot of information loaded into a pocket-size volume, from a very decent fellow who seems better able to contain his ego than some of the Americans who stand on his shoulders whether they admit it or not.

I get the same impression. He seems passionate about wine yet humble in his writing. It's the reason I look forward to his guides each year. It's like purchasing a friend. :)

None. When I first got serious about wine, they were indispensable, but I'm knowledgeable enough these days and the wines I'd likely need help with are the ones Hugh would need help with too!

Because I'm a bit of a packrat, I've still got 7-8 of them from back when they were a requisite annual purchase (actually, I never bought any of them as it made for an easy Xmas present from my in-laws).

Gave all mine away years ago to students in some of my wine courses.
