WTN: Two Whites w/ Dinner...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Aug 02, 2013 9:51 am

Susan has a young teacher from Madrid staying w/ her for a few weeks, so Carlotta made SpanishTortilla and we tried two whites:
1. BallardLane Chard CentralCoast (13.6%) TurnKeyWineBrands/SantaMaria 2012: Light gold color; clean melony/Chard very light oak/nutmeg slight mineral/chalky/perfumed talc quite pretty nose; rather tart light chalky/mineral/perfumed talc clean honeydew melon/Chard/spicy very light oak flavor; med.long light honeydew melon/Chard/apple/pear light chalky/perfumed talc finish; a quite pretty lightweight Chard w/ some interesting things therein; screaming deal and blows away any TJ's Chard in that price range. $9.00 (AV)
2. FernandezGomez GarnachaBlanca Dd'OC: RiojoAlavesa (14%; Labastide SWG Imports/Bend/OR 2011: Light gold color; quite aromatic melony/honeysuckle/floral/GB slight mineral/stony quite fragrant/perfumed nose; bit soft ripe/lush strong GB/honeysuckle/honeyed/floral/melony slight stony/mineral flavor w/ no obvious oak; med.long ripe/GB/melony/honeysuckle/floral/perfumey light stony/mineral finish; loads of floral GB aromatics w/ some interesting low-key mineral character; good value at $26.00 (AV)
The usual BloodyPulpit:
1. TurnKey: This is a PrivateLabel operation based in SantaBarbara and has a custom crush facility up in SantaMaria. Can't find out anything about the people behind it, but they obviously know what they're doing.
2. Gomez: This is perhaps the best GrenacheBlanca I've yet had from Spain. Mostly they come out of the Priorat and tend to be somewhat on the soft &porky side. This one had a nice balance to it. One of the better Rioja whites I can recall.
