WTN: Seleccion Torres "Celeste" Tempranillo 2004

Very dark purple in the glass.

Lovely nose, with spicy chocolate, vanilla and some floral notes.

Quite rich, plush and silky in the mouth, black cherry and raspberry, smoky, chocolate, pencil lead, spicy, with just enough oak to give it some sweetness. Good acidity and a slight bitter streak toward the end keeps it from being too rich and sweet.

A deceptively large, rich and powerful wine. Delicious.

A very good value at at $19.95 Canadian.

We had a Spain/Portugal tasting last night, Bruce and this was one of the feature wines. Definately one for the cellar in my books but can see the attraction now. Powerful and austere, big tannins, earthy black fruits. Would be surprised if this did not get better. Not too many buys at end of session, many went for the `04 Crasto Reserva my WOTN.

Thanks for your notes Bob. I bought three, so two are still slumbering in the cellar.

Yup, that's the one.

The label is an exact image of the celestial heavens at the vineyards.

I really enjoyed it. Quite luscious. Black fruits that go on and on. Foresty nose.

I've only had the Torres Celeste 2003 - but a brilliant wine nevertheless.

Deep dark red with a savoury, meaty, winey aroma infused with vanillin oak, and full-bodied, spicy flavours with good acidity, fine-grained firm-textured meaty tannins, a iron-like earthiness and dark, succulent fruit with a touch of allspice on the juicy, savoury finish. Very impressive.

We drank this while watching Comet NcNaught do dramatic things in the southern skies last month. Seemed appropriate, somehow.
