WTN: Two Last Night...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Sep 29, 2014 11:54 am

Tried these two last night w/ my grilled flap steak:
1. Marietta OldVineRed Lot #61 Calif RW (13.5%; mostly Zin; www.MariettaCellars.com) Geyserville NV: Dark color; light Am.oak/vanilla/smokey bit dusty/OV strong briary/blackberry/Zin/spicy quite attractive classic OV Zin nose; bit tart rather dusty/OV earthy rather blackberry/raspberry/Zin/spicy/briary light vanilla/smokey/Am.oak bit leathery/old-timey/rustic flavor w/ slight rough tannins; long briary/blackberry/Zin/spicy light Am.oak/vanilla/smokey rather dusty/OV finish w/ some rough tannins; needs a yr or two yet; a classic rustic/old-timey OVR at a great price. $nc(RF)/$14.00

A wee BloodtPulpit:
1. I have, of course, followed the Maarietta OVR from the very start. Hmmm...musta been Lot#1 I would guess. It remains, yr in & yr out, one of the real values in a Calif red wine and often my go-to when I see it on a restaurant list. It has a certain old-timey/rustic quality to it that reminds me some of Southern Italian reds. This Lot #61 seems to show more Zin varietal character than the Lot#60 I had a month ago. A great wine value, it is. I look forward to trying Lot#117 sometime down the road.

2. The JohnSebastianoVnyd lies astride the StaRitaHills NE border. I suspect that grapes outside the SRH boundary are not as expensive as the SRH ones. Hence, I suspect Adam's Grenache is not a SRH Grenache. This is pretty much right on the border for areas that can ripen Grenache.
This wine had a lot of Rhonish character and a structure you don't usually find in typical Calif tutti-fruty Grenache.

Jon,
I liked the #60 pretty well. It seems to have more clunky PS character and speak more of Mendocino.
It's a good/blocky OVR as far as I'm concerned at a more than fair price.
I liked the #61 more because it showed more Zin varietal character and not quite a blocky/rustic as #60.

Both are pretty much in the classic OVR character.

Gotcha and thanks..Haven't seen the OV wines locally in quite some time. We were visiting our daughter this weekend and I spotted the OV 60 in a local store and bought some so I was pleasantly surprised to see your post ..
