Yet Another Wine Worry..BarCode Scanners

by TomHill » Thu May 07, 2015 4:57 pm

Was tracking down some info on sensitive crystallization, as used by RandallGrahm, and I found a site:
BarCodeScanners
that referred to a Domaine Leflaive study that demonstrated the bar code scanners used in supermarkets and wine shops can actually damage a wine.
I hope you people are worrying about that when your local wine shop uses a scanner on your wine.

I think it's a problem only if the wine is made with GMO grapes, Tom.

Well all those hipster wines get ruined if they are not rung up on an abacus.

Many CellarTracker users have bar-code scanners for reading CT bar code labels, so if there was anything in this I would have expected to see mentions or queries on the CT forum..

As I understand it bar-code scanners emit a laser beam, and thats amplified light so a uick flash of light on a label will damage a wine? Considering the millions of bottles scanned worldwide year after year in shops seems very unlikely it's not been recognised as a problem before. Also as I recall some advanced bottling lines use lasers for managing bottles.

The page linked to that holds the original reserach has been removed

I wonder if Leflaive's wines roll their eyes at the stupidity.

My bar code is: "I'll have another glass of that Chablis, please." Scan that!

I was at a college sorority reunion and we weren't supposed to have alcohol at the formal dinner, but one at our table smuggled in a bottle of German Riesling. I learned that one of my classmates, Ann, was a German teacher. Susie M. said she talks too much after having a couple glasses of wine. I said I talk German after having a couple glasses of German wine. Ann said "You speak German?" And I answered "Jawohl." (Our table probably had a better time than the other tables.)
