WTN: ESJ, Luneau-Papin, etc to celebrate new pup

by Dale Williams » Mon Apr 03, 2017 10:56 am

After a couple of lonely months, we got a new pup from Basset rescue. Ruby is 5 months old
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9YVNG ... sp=sharing

Some assorted wines to celebrate

With flounder, the 2009 Luneau-Papin “Semper Excelsior” Muscadet. Rich, almost fat style of Muscadet, but anchored by some good acids. Pear, citrus and a touch of peach, with some mineral notes on finish. Not especially Melon-ish, but tasty. B+

2015 Lagar de Broullon Albarino
This actually tastes more like Muscadet than the Muscadet, salty/oyster shell notes, snappy acids, citrus, good QPR> B+/A-

With assorted leftovers, the 2016 Edmunds St John Bone Jolly Rose. Strawberries, a little citrus zest, good but I didn’t pay enough attention as it was first night with pup. Will open another soon,

With pork, the 2015 Edmunds St John Gamay noir. Screwcap, and a little reductive note at first, but it blows off, and a pretty wine is there, raspberries and cherries, a pleasant herby/stemmy note. Fresh and food friendly, but not very long. B+/B

With skirt steak, the 2013 Porter Creek “Timbervine” Syrah (RRV). Light for CA syrah (13.4), with pepper and herb notes I like but other might not. Good acids, blackberry and black cherry fruit, light green herb notes, lively. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Grilled a rib eye from Brian the other night and opened a bottle of ESJ Bassetti syrah which was a good match but I'll admit the wine will be better with another five years of age. Now at my age I consult actuary tables not vintage charts so it's just as well we drank the wine at the moment. Really a great bottle of wine in spite of it's youth.

Oh, isn't she beautiful! I've never seen a bassett almost all black and white. I'm so happy for you, and even happier for her. She couldn't have found a more loving forever home.

Yes, Jenise, she's a tricolor, but you're right she's unusual in high percentage of black to brown.
Thanks all for good wishes, it's a lot of work dealing with a puppy compared to (even a very active till almost the end) 14 year old.
We usually served ESJ Bassetti (or occasionally Mulderbosch Faithful Hound) at Lucy's bday parties, and intend to keep tradition for Ruby.
I meant to mention the Lagar de Broullon Albarino had more tartrate crystals than any wine I've seen in ages.

Well, at least at five months I hope the potty training part is behind you. That's a splendid age for adoption, or at least it works this way with cats--she has enough of her adult personality that both she and you (and Betsy) can bond on something more than sheer cuteness. My sweet spot would be 6 to 12 months for cats, though in fact I now leave it up to the rescue to choose me so I get what I get. Our newest adoptee, Maestro, is probably 6-7 years.

Btw, I just described your loss of Lucy to Bob, whom you met, and learned that he once had a basset named Lucy. I didn't know that. Then I showed him the picture of Ruby, and he just lost it.
