WTN: 1999 Allemand Cornas Les Chaillots

by Rahsaan » Sun Apr 09, 2017 10:17 am

From magnum. The bottle (in general) and the nose are an absolute treat. Smells of so many aged and complex red spices, well beyond the fruit stage. Lovely and enjoyable.

But in the mouth, I find less pleasure, largely because it's gone beyond the cepage and because I can no longer taste it as Cornas. The mouth does offer nice silky spicy red fruits. It is something to enjoy, but doesn't excite me as much as the nose.

Of course my inability to find the Cornas/Allemand/Chaillots distinctiveness may be just as much about me and my limited experience with aged Cornas as it is about the wine. I've had similar reactions to the few Cornas wines I've drunk with similar amounts of age, and suspect I would have enjoyed them all more if drunk a few years earlier.

But such is life. It was certainly a fun dinner.
