WTN: Ritchie's Rich

by David M. Bueker » Mon Jul 17, 2017 9:26 pm

2015 Bevan Cellars Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (7/15/2017)
I am not supposed to like this wine. My white wine preferences are etched in minerals and crisp tree fruit tones. But along comes a harpy of a Chardonnay, wearing a tropical fruit headpiece like a vinous Carmen Miranda, and it dances the samba across my palate. Spice and vanilla notes make the oak obvious, but dance as a perfect partner to the fruit. It's really quite shocking how easy this is to drink, despite it being more than a little bit...umm...obvious. It's not an every night thing for me by any means, but it sure makes for a wild fling.

You painted a much better picture of it than I did. But yes, that's Bevan chardonnay. A temptress.

I'm not as lyrical as you, David. Joseph Swan makes a couple of Ritchie Vineyard Chards that your post reminded me of.

I know the feeling. Although atmosphere and timing play a big role.

End of a long day, very thirsty, first glass of wine being something shockingly easy to drink, yes, it can all work out.

Under other more complicated and nuanced circumstances, it goes another direction.
