JonBonne on Fiano

In Punch, JonBonne makes a case for the greatness of Campagnia's Fiano grape:
Bonne/Fiano

He recommends the Ciro Picariello, one that is imported by OliverMcCrum, and one that I particularly like...everything you'd want in a white wine.

Oliver asserts that Fiano is a wine that can age particularly well, though I've not yet had an older one.

And Jon, correctly, gives props to Ryan&Megan for their Ryme Fiano.

I think Jon Bonné has excellent taste.

But seriously, a thoughtful California winemaker called Steve Edmunds told me ages ago he thought it might make sense to plant varieties from the south of Italy here in CA, because of the latitude IIRC. Steve, you should give it a go!

time's running short, amigo; I'm just past 70, and not sure if I've got enough vintages ahead of me for that! :|

I noticed one oddball Fiani locally - from Australia no less - Oliver's Taranga Fiano.

Haven't yet summoned the courage to try a bottle. Anyone come across it?

I've had three Fiano's in the last year, possibly a 4th at Bill Spohn's house that I didn't take notes on one fine summer afternoon. But still, looking back on all four: what is Fiano , really? Biggish bodied, but after that, I'm not sure.

2016 Colli della Murgia Gravina Tufjano Fiano
Dinner at Agrivino. Moscatty nose, peachy, fuller on the palate than expected based on the nose. Nice! Well-paired with a pureed carrot soup.

2015 Cruess Fiano Russian River Valley
A taste from another table at At Petit Crenn. Extracted electric yellow color, full-bodied, floral nose, points sweet on entry then finishes bone dry. And alcoholic. Not appealing to me nor right, IMO, for the food here.

2014 Vadiaperti Fiano di Avellino Fiano di Avellino DOCG
Marzipan and sweet corn give big body and flavor to this cool-vintage white. Very good.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
