Someone actually opened a wine bar in this podunk little town, and we went last night. Was impressed at their list--excellent global choices but with a great many WA wines, as befits the location. A few high roller bottles but realistically they're expecting much more demand and interest at the lower end, and the prices on the high end bottles are similar to or at retail. Like Opus One for $112. All Riedel stemware. We went European hoping to impress the owners with our urbanity (wink):
2014 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent Chardonnay
$66/bottle. More color (in restaurant lighting) than I expect from Fevre but the euphoria-inducing nose and splendid palate are spot-on. Fully open, generous and complex as one expects from the vintage, lasting finish. As I told Bob, if this were the only white wine I had to drink for the rest of my life I wouldn't be unhappy.
2015 Jean-Michel Dupré Beaujolais-Villages Vignes de 1940 Gamay
$9/glass from the BTG list. Classic gamay notes of soft red fruits with celery and geranium leaf (thanks, Dale). Drink sooner than later.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
