WTN: Radio-Coteau Zin Lemorel '14...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Oct 30, 2017 3:31 pm

Tried this last night as I was confiting duck legs:
1. Radio-Coteau Zin Lemorel/SonomaCoast/SonomaCnty (14.8%; www.RadioCoteau.com; U/U) Sebastapol 2014: Very dark color; intense blackberry/raspberry/Zin very spicy some cold-climate/peppery quite dusty/OV some mineral/graphite complex beautiful nose; fairly tart/tangy/bit metallic very strong blackberry/Zin/raspberry very spicy/c-c/peppery some graphite/metallic/mineral very structured sinewy/wiry flavor w/ ample ripe/tangy tannins; very long/lingering intense blackberry/strawberry/Zin very spicy/c-c/peppery quite dusty/OV very light toasty/oak structured complex finish w/ ample tangy/ripe tannins; a very unusual expression of Zin, very c-c; a very structured lithe/wirey/sinewy Zin w/ almost a teeth-chattering acidity despite its ripeness; loads of dusty/OV character and spicy character; should age very well. $52.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. R-C: I like EricSussman's wines quite a lot, particularly his Syrahs. This Lemorel Zin (named after the road) is from the (very) old vonWeidlich vnyd. It was farmed by BrianAlpert until Eric took over the farming 3-4 yrs ago. Definitely one of Calif's great OV/Zin vnyds.
These grapes used to be the source of the old Ridge Occidental Zins in the early '70's. Finally PaulDraper gave up on the vnyd because it was so difficult to ripen the grapes. He recounts how one yr, he drove up to the vnyd as as he pulled into the driveway, he saw Robert vonWeidlich dumping bags of sugar into the picking bins. This R-C brings back some of the high-acid Occidental Zins Draper made.
