Butler might of evolved from an Old French or Old English/French term meaning "cup bearer"

According to the OED, butler is related to several other words that essentially mean bottler, and derived from the Latin buticula (bottles) via French.

Barrels were delivered to the house by the wine merchant and, as Peter said, the butler was responsible for the bottling.
