WTN: Fevre Domdechant Mouton Baronne Plaisir Branaire

November 10 2017 small group lunch blind tasting notes.

2004 William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Valmur – medium colour with a waxy citrus nose with some honey. Full in the mouth with a surprising amount of acidity felt along the sides of your tongue, finishing with flashes of apple. Very good.

2001 Domdechant Werner Hochheimer Domdechaney Riesling Spätlese – amber colour, some nice sweet petrol notes in the nose, excellent balance and smooth feel, and an RS level that had me thinking it might have been an Auslese. Good!

1988 Château Mouton-Baronne-Philippe – medium red with clear edges, a good nose with vanilla, cedar and cassis with slight green notes. It developed lead pencil with time. In the mouth it had decent entry but showed an astringency toward the end that betrayed the age.

2001 Plaisir de Merle Cabernet Sauvignon – dark nose, sweet with sweet dark fruit fruit, fairly ripe, more like a syrah than a cab, decent if simple finish.

2001 Château Branaire – dark with a big fruit and vanilla nose, slight astringency, well put together with good acidity and softening tannins. Mature and will hold.

Thank god for the Branaire, it sounds like.

Branaire and the Riesling were the best of the bunch, for sure.

I still have a few bottles of 1975 Branaire which is drinking quite nicely now!
